Types of places

There are lots of different places and we've needed to categorise them, this isn't a perfect science but we do need some consistency so here are the basics:

To qualify as a marina the place must have at least:

  • Electricty close to mooring
  • Water close to mooring
  • Toilet close to mooring
  • Pontoon access to facilities
  • Shelter from poor weather

A harbour may be natural or man-made but provide:

  • Shelter from poor weather

We see many places that have a jetty or quay-side these provide:

  • A physical place to tie up too.

Many coastlines have bays which provide good anchorages, generally these provide:

  • Some degree of shelter and holding for anchor in modest conditions
